The name “Evening Bell” is an atmospheric allusion to the sound of a large temple bell struck at dust and may be a reference to the Eight Views of the Xiang and Xiao Rivers, a common theme of painting and poetry from Chinese tradition. (Ice & Stone: Suiseki Viewing Stones and the Hokkaido Photography of Michael Kenna, Portland Japanese Garden, February 9 – March 24, 2019. Exhibition label: “Evening
Bell.”)
